Send us a textIn this week's episode from the vault I answer some diastasis recti related questions that come up regularly.I also talk about the having to take a break from rehab exercises. Of course it happens regularly that life gets in the way, is that a probolem or is it just not that big of a deal?Here are the questions I cover;1. I'm not sure I'm doing the home workouts right. When there is a spot that says "breathing (lying)" or "(standing)", does that just mean I do the upward motion breath that many times while lying or sitting? (I explain why we do this) And am I supposed to breathe up from my lower abdomen as shown in the breathing video every time I exhale in an exercise?2. So, I was super diligent the first 6 weeks, but then I had a whole bunch of things come up right after the other and I've been pretty inconsistent for the last 6 weeks. I got all the way through weeks 1-4 and noticed a huge difference in strength and my diastasis gap and then got half way through weeks 4-8. I've done the workouts off and on since then but my gap seems to have digressed and gotten bigger... is that possible or am I imagining it? And if it is possible, how do I stop it from spreading apart again, are there certain motions I just can't do anymore? 3. Are the exercises you have us do in this 12  week program safe for early pregnancy as well, or just for postnatal?4. And last question, how will I be able to tell once my body is strong enough again and how can I know that my diastasis is healed? What about wearing one during your pregnancy, will that actually help prevent diastasis recti/pelvic girdle pain etc? In today's episode, I discuss the real deal with taping and belly bands during pregnancy. Despite their popularity, there's a lack of evidence to suggest they prevent diastasis recti; instead, strengthening exercises prove to be the more effective method. I talk about what they do help with, how you should use one and what you should be looking for if you're looking to buy one.I also tackle the widespread claim that oats, brewer's yeast (and other supplements) are the answer to increased breastmilk production. The conversation doesn't end there – we dive into the emotional whirlpool that new mothers face, especially the fear of not producing enough breast milk; a concern for a staggering 76% of mothers, according to a survey. I examine the reliability of this statistic and the societal pressure to steer clear of formula supplementation. Send us a text From the Vault; This week I talk about one of the questions that comes up regularly in the day-to-day life of any personal trainer and dietitian."I am doing everything right, why am I not losing weight?".Fundamentally the answer is always "It's because you're not doing everything right", and this is what most personal trainers and dietitians will tell you, but that answer isn't enough.The following question should always be "Let's try to find out what the missing link is to your success"I go over the many reasons, and there can be many, you're just not getting the results you're looking for.I talk about;The importance of BMR and calculating that correctly.The problem with overreliance on exercise/training for weightloss.The problem with "calorie in and calorie out, it's that simple"."The time of the month" and the effects of menstruation on weight fluctuations.How sleep, stress, anxiety and depression all impact your weight.That breastfeeding does not equal weightloss.The overall effects of hormones, including post-pregnancy hormones, on weightloss.How "going out for a meal" can be a real bugger when you're trying to lose weight, and what the solution is...don't worry, it's not "just stay in".Why I recommend going to "fancy restaurants" to almost all my weightloss clients.And a bit more.Reminder; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles. My physio is (name removed) ,obviously I’ve known him for years, but my women’s health physio is someone Iv’e never dealt with before (and neither has anyone else I know in (name of sport removed)) and she said something that stuck with me and made me think…ermm…I’ll ask Pete about that.  She said that my post-partum recovery program should be specific to (sport removed). And yes going back to playing is absolutely key but, how is the program sport specific? when I asked her to clarify she said that another sport’s program is completely different postpartum than ours is and she was a bit short after that so I left it. Any thoughts?So that is what I'm discussing today.I go through my reasoning and explain the way I work, with both athletes and non-athletes.Is it different if you're a tennis or football player? How long does postpartum recovery take without help? And, follow the RIGHT science communicators!

Send us a textThis week I, once again, briefly touch on how long it takes to recover postpartum. This after a question from someone who asked "how long it would take to recover if you didn't do anything vs following a program".It's a fascinating question tbh and it kind of all depends on what you mean with "post partum recovery".I explain why I believe everyone needs a bit of assistance with their recovery and what the best methods, in order of effectiveness, are.I then talk for a while about the importance of following the right science communicators.A great post by Dr Colenso Semple on threads (my preferred platform) shows that just citing a paper, and even reading a paper, is not enough. In this case she highlights that one of the studies referenced in the paper was now retracted and written by someone who had falsified data. This shows you just how important it is to follow the right science communicators. I personally follow several and they are all experts in their related fields. Getting ALL your science info from one source (for instance Huberman) leaves you open to "the grift" and if people don't really know what they're talking about/citing then it's very easy to misinterpret a piece of information.
