Zhalong red-crowned crane

Elegance  in the air: red-crowned crane空中精灵:丹顶鹤The  Zhalong National Nature Reserve in Heilongjiang province has released over 380 red-crowned cranes into the wild, making it the world's largest and most populous breeding and habitat site for wild red-crowned cranes, as well as a base for artificial breeding and rewilding. Established  in 1979, the reserve was upgraded to a national-level reserve by the State Council in 1987 and is now known as the hometown of red-crowned cranes. It was inscribed on the List of Wetlands of International Importance in 1992 and was honored as one of China's Top Ten Charming Wetlands in 2013. Reflecting  on these hard-won achievements, Wang Wenfeng, a conservationist who has worked at the reserve for 21 years, has many emotions. When he began his work at Zhalong, Wang initiated the establishment of a red-crowned crane captive breeding work group and set up a red-crowned crane captive breeding base. The work aimed to reduce interference in the breeding of free-range red-crowned cranes and facilitate the successful rewilding of their offspring. The breeding season for red-crowned cranes is from March to June, with each pair laying one to two eggs at a time," said Wang. "Initially, we retrieved the eggs of free-range cranes for artificial incubation, but we gradually found that red-crowned cranes are often affected by environmental factors and predators, making it difficult to ensure the survival rate. "Especially after May and June, flying insects and biting pests abound, constantly disturbing the incubation process, significantly reducing the success rate of hatching," he added.“丹顶鹤的繁殖季节在每年的三月至六月,每对丹顶鹤一次会产下一到两个蛋,”王文锋说,“起初我们收集野外丹顶鹤的蛋进行人工孵化,但逐渐发现丹顶鹤常受环境因素和捕食者影响,导致成活率难以保障。 The  red-crowned crane is a vigilant bird that often chooses to nest and breed hidden in the reed beds in relatively shallow waters. "The water surface cannot be too deep," said Wang. "It needs to be easy for them to wade in for feeding and the height of the reeds cannot be too low to avoid detection by predators. "In 2017, we found a sharp decline in the wild red-crowned crane population in the core area of the Lindian Reed Breeding Field," he said. "It was mainly due to excessive reed harvesting, leaving the cranes with no place to nest and breed." After  contacting the local forestry department, they adopted a reed leasing approach and continued implementing wetland restoration projects to reserve reed belts. They provided compensation to farmers to preserve reed and create suitable habitats for red-crowned cranes and other rare waterfowl. So far, the compensation area for reed ponds in the core area managed by the Zhalong administration has reached 1,300 hectares, with an annual compensation amount of 2 million yuan.

Study  casts new light on origins of dairy fermentation研究新发现揭示奶制品发酵起源A  groundbreaking study conducted by Chinese scientists has shed new light on the origins of dairy fermentation practices dating back thousands of years. The study, published in the journal Cell, offers a glimpse into the lives of Bronze Age people and their innovative food production techniques. The samples of kefir cheese, found in a cemetery in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, are around 3,500 years old and could be the most ancient variety of cheese known to humans. The  research team, led by Fu Qiaomei, director of the Molecular Paleontology Laboratory at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, extracted high-quality genomes of Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens, a bacterial species used for fermentation, from the cheese samples found inside mummies at the Xiaohe cemetery, located in Xinjiang's Bayingolin Mongol autonomous prefecture. "This indicates that residents of Xiaohe were already using kefir grains to make kefir yogurt or cheese, demonstrating ancient wisdom and craftsmanship in using fermentation microbes to ferment dairy products," Fu said. The  study challenges the long-held belief that kefir spread from the Northern Caucasus to Europe and other regions, as it found an additional spreading route of kefir from Xinjiang to inland East Asia. The spread of dairy fermentation techniques largely accompanied human migration and interaction, which in turn drove the evolution of lactic acid bacteria. The  research team reconstructed the ancient L. kefiranofaciens genomes and found two important strains, one originating in Europe and the other in East Asia. The European strain originated in Russia's Caucasus region, while the East Asian one originated in the Xizang autonomous region of China, according to the study. The  Russian strain is currently widely used globally, including in Europe, the United States and Japan, for making yogurt and cheese. "The strain used by the residents of Xiaohe for fermentation is closely related to a less common group of L. kefiranofaciens that originated in Xizang. Xinjiang and Xizang are at the source of this East Asian transmission route," Fu said. She added that before this study, no DNA research had been conducted on fermented products anywhere in the world. William  Taylor, an anthropologist at the University of Colorado Boulder, described the study as groundbreaking, highlighting how cheese and dairy products were foundational to ancient ways of life. Yang Yimin, a professor at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that organic residues provide valuable insights into human behavior and culture that have been lost in time. "It is exciting to see how much information can be retrieved from these cheese samples," he added.

Enhanced  beauty can be compatible with intellectual development美貌可与智慧兼修Two  girls are unpacking their luggage in a university dorm after going through their registration procedures. At that moment, the two girls stop unpacking and look more closely at each other. The girls then jump to embrace each other. They were classmates and good friends in senior high school! The reason they failed to recognize each other is that after taking the college entrance exam, they both went for a series of cosmetic surgeries to "enhance their beauty" to the extent of looking like different persons. This is the gist of a popular story online. According  to reports, plastic surgeons have to work overtime during summer vacations, especially after the conclusion of the college entrance exam, because thousands of girls make appointments in advance for beauty enhancement procedure. More than 1 million Chinese people underwent cosmetic surgery in 2023, according to some reports. Reports  say an increasing number of girls are asking their parents to pay for their "beauty-enhancing procedure" as their reward for doing well in the college entrance exam. Parents, in general, are mostly happy to pay if they can afford to, because many think that inner beauty and outer beauty are equally important to their daughters' development. The  long summer vacation provides enough time for girls to undergo a cosmetic surgery. When a new school year begins in September, a girl who has undergone a cosmetic surgery and looks "more beautiful" can walk onto the campus with more confidence. In a completely new environment, few people would realize that the girl has probably undergone a double-eyelid or rhinoplasty surgery, or breast augmentation procedure, or all possible procedures. Chinese  society has become tolerant toward young women's efforts to "look beautiful". Unlike about 20 years ago when a person with double eyelids would become the favorite topic of discussion of neighbors, people today tend to turn a blind eye toward someone who looks different after being absent from the neighborhood for a few days. Most people tend to believe those undergoing cosmetic surgery are not doing anything wrong by paying, with their own money, to enhance their beauty because it makes them feel more confident of and satisfied with themselves. Opposing  opinions do exist. Some say cosmetic surgeries may weaken women's social standing and turn them into eye candies. Others claim that by being obsessed with their physical appearance, young women could end up neglecting their studies, and lose out on intellectual and spiritual development. Such criticisms compel us to choose either option A or option B. The question is: Why can't people choose both of them?

Subsidizing  tours can be designed to offer more returns设计旅游补贴,促进更多收益Statistics  from the National Immigration Administration show that as many as 17.25 million foreign tourists entered China in the first seven months of this year, up 129.9 percent compared with the same period last year. Impressive as the number is, foreign tourists will soon find themselves overshadowed by domestic tourists who are flocking to some of the hot destinations. The  Ministry of Culture and Tourism had earlier disclosed that in the first half of this year, Chinese people made 2.72 billion domestic trips, up 14.3 percent year-on-year. Domestic tours usually refer to people traveling using different transport means and heading to other regions for nonbusiness reasons. Going by the ministry's statistics, on average, each Chinese person made nearly two domestic trips in the first six months of this year. Total expenditure incurred on tourism, during the period, was 2.73 trillion yuan, making tourism an important contributor to national efforts at boosting domestic consumption. Throughout  history, China has never been short of brave and curious people. Nearly 2,500 years ago, Confucius toured many states to promote his philosophy as well as to explore new landscapes. The works of great poets like Li Bai and Du Fu would have been devoid of all their color had they not toured different parts of the country 1,300 years ago for a better understanding of society and a deeper appreciation of the beautiful sceneries. By  the 1990s, more and more Chinese people began to flock to tourist destinations. Since then, the number has been rising, enabling China to become the world's biggest domestic tourism market and probably the biggest source country for outbound tourism. In the early stages, people mostly joined tour groups for convenience as well as affordability. Then they chose to do it on their own, for relaxation and freedom. Now many people prefer driving to faraway destinations for greater mobility. Though  the country has more than 13,000 tourist destinations ranked between 1A and 5A, the huge number of domestic tourists means that most of them, especially the 300 top-ranked 5A sites, are crowded most of the time. Therefore, most Chinese people know that they should avoid traveling during the two Golden Week holidays, in May and in October, when most tourist sites are crammed with people, who make use of the week-long vacation to visit tourist sites. To  boost domestic consumption, the central and local governments have been offering subsidies to those looking to buy motor vehicles, machinery, and other industrial products. I think the authorities should put in more efforts to subsidize tourism because, as is amply clear now, people are more willing to loosen their purse strings when it comes to tours.

Global  seekers dive into Taoist culture at Tianma peak in Hubei全球寻道者在湖北天马峰体验道教文化As  sunlight is piercing through the mist and illuminating the forest at the Tianma peak in Shiyan, Central China's Hubei province, Alan from Ireland and six others faced the rising sun, adjusting their breathing and stretching their bodies. This marked the beginning of their 15-day immersion in traditional Taoist culture. A  group of people from different countries, captivated by Chinese traditional culture, has journeyed to the Tianma peak in August. The peak, as one of the 72 peaks of the Wudang Mountain, home to a famous complex of Taoist temples and monasteries, has attracted hundreds of foreigners from all walks of life since 2005, including corporate executives and film actors. According  to Hubei Daily, in their exploration, participants can study the Taoist classics, the Book of Changes and Tao Te Ching, and learn about sound therapy, fire therapy, and herbal medicine in practical sessions. Most foreign participants have their own jobs and live in their countries. Some visit the Tianma peak annually as a regular vacation spot, integrating it into their lives. Others, like a participant from Portugal, have changed career paths upon returning home by opening a wellness school, while a German participant started his own publishing house to translate classic Chinese cultural texts for international readers. Alan  from Ireland, who has spent over seven years intermittently on the mountain, said: "Here, one can not only practice Chinese martial arts, but can also learn traditional Chinese medicine and play traditional Chinese instruments, which offers a comprehensive experience of Chinese culture." Lola  from Russia, who resides in London, began practicing Chinese martial arts at the age of nine with the aim of alleviating asthma and sinusitis, and gradually fell in love with Chinese culture. In 2013, she opened a Chinese medicine health center in London, attracting hundreds of Britons each year. Like  Lola, Simona from the Czech Republic opened a TCM health center in her hometown after graduating from university, and she has been running it for 29 years. She hopes to delve into the core of Chinese medicine and learn its health principles to achieve well-being through self-adjustment. Alan  said he first came to the Tianma peak in 2011, and the following years of exploration helped him overcome his spiritual struggles. "Chinese traditional culture values harmony in diversity and does not emphasize adversarial thinking. Many are moved by this inclusivity, including myself. "This inclusive and open-minded approach is precious in our society," he said.

The  peak of natural beauty is the height of ambition自然美景的巅峰上是凌云壮志For  as long as I can remember, I have had a fascination with climbing mountains. Coming from Wales, home to (in my perhaps biased opinion) some of the most beautiful mountains and natural scenes in the world, I have been lucky enough to be able to feed this love of scaling lofty peaks as much as my heart desired. Though I can't pinpoint exactly where this fascination comes from, the reason may be as simple as the answer mountaineer George Mallory gave to the question why climb Qomolangma — known in the West as Mount Everest. His reply was, "Because it's there." Luckily , Beijing has also proven to be a fertile ground for this hobby, with the Great Wall snaking its way through the imposing mountain ranges to the north of the city. But when it comes to mountains in China, there has only been one image that springs to mind — an iconic view, so much so that it features as an image on the 20 yuan note — these are the karst mountains of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, part of the South China Karst, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. After  many years of living in China, I finally got the chance to visit these natural wonders while on a trip to Xingping ancient town. There is a lot that could be said about the area in general, from the renowned cormorant fisherman posing for photos on the banks of the Lijiang River as countless tourists float by on bamboo rafts to the many ancient towns and villages dotted throughout the region such as Yangshuo and Xingping offering enough unique local history and culture to warrant the trip alone. But  the real stars of the show, and the main reason I visited the area, were undoubtedly the frankly staggering amount of karst mountains, their millennia-long formation arising from soluble rocks that were broken down over time by certain acids, forming sinkholes and caverns, such as the Reed Flute Cave in Guilin, and eventually eroding into the topography that is visible throughout the region today. I  thought I knew what to expect upon arrival but photos and banknotes do not do these natural wonders justice. No matter where you go or where you look, these jagged green-topped monoliths pierce the skyline in all directions as far as the eye can see. The  abundant beauty and awe-inspiring views of the region even the stifling heat and humidity that usually keep me hidden away indoors under an air conditioner. Whether  hiking, relaxing on a boat cruise down the river or simply enjoying the local area, the combination of karst mountains, ancient towns, meandering rivers and lush vegetation creates one of the most captivating natural landscapes I have had the privilege of witnessing and will be one I surely return to in the future.

The  ‘funflation’ effect: Why Americans are spending so much on travel and entertainment this summer“娱乐通胀”效应:为什么美国人今年夏天在旅行和娱乐上花费如此之多? Even  while carrying $1.13 trillion in credit card debt, many Americans are still willing to splurge on travel and entertainment. But this summer it will cost even more thanks to “funflation,” a term economists use to explain the increasing price tags of live events as consumers hanker for the experiences they lost during the Covid years. “I t’s hard to overstate the impact of the pandemic. Seeds  of revival古艺新生Taiwan -born designer Jenny Chou, who has a studio in Beijing, visited Dali Dong village for the first time in the autumn of 2015 on a business trip. She happened to see villagers harvesting indigo and soaking it in vats to make dye. Chou was fascinated by their perseverance, and that weaving was part of the Dong way of maintaining their traditional styles in an industrialized age. Making Dong cloth is not a task for one person alone," Chou says. "Spinning and winding thread, weaving it on the loom to produce white cloth, dipping it in the indigo dye, it takes about a year to complete a pi (a Chinese measurement of length, roughly equivalent to 33 meters)." Inspired , she went on to found the Dousa Women's Cooperative, which allows the women of Dali Dong village to not only continue the traditional craft, but also to experiment. "I've never felt that the traditional and the modern are opposed. What is modern today will someday become a part of tradition," Chou says. Yang  Shenghua was among those who signed up for the courses at the cooperative, which she says allowed her to once again experience the joy of making cloth. "The craft was passed on from my grandmother to my mother, and then to me. It used to be something that I was told to do because my mother and her mother did it, and I didn't want to be useless," she says. "Now it is something I like doing, because it is part of our tradition and culture. I have a small stand in the village, where I sell handmade textiles to tourists, using patterns I designed myself. It's a way of popularizing our heritage so that it finds new life and is carried on."“我在村里有个小摊,向游客出售手工纺织品,图案都是我自己设计的。 Chou  says Dong cloth can also be used by urban dwellers. It can be made into objects for daily use, like pillowcases, decorations and tissue boxes. In 2017, she took Dong cloth from the cooperative in Dali Dong village to Beijing Design Week. "I think that incorporating Dong cloth in fashion design is a natural development, just like Dior has used Dong jacquard fabric in its collection, introducing traditional Dong craftsmanship to more people," Chou says. Such  a combination of Eastern tradition and Western design is, according to Dior, to connect people with those industrious women in Dali Dong village, who together weave and dye, and create a variety of patterns that have been sourced from nature and found in the objects and animals in their day-to-day life.

A  tradition worth dyeing for古艺新生:贵州侗寨蓝靛染Ethnic  costumes in China combine rich colors and patterns with style, and their distinctive beauty and grace dazzle people entering a village inhabited by the Dong ethnic group. If they do, they may be fortunate enough to see women making monochromatic dark blue fabric with a metallic sheen that they themselves wear. It is known as liangbu (bright cloth), a special textile that takes a dozen steps to make, and which is a glittering example of handmade Dong cloth. Located  primarily in Guizhou, Hunan and Hubei provinces, and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, the Dong people have developed a trove of arts and crafts over the centuries, among them Grand Song (dage), and wooden architectural structures, such as drum towers and covered wind and rain bridges. Their  traditional dress-making craftsmanship is recognized as a form of national-level intangible cultural heritage, and apparent upon entering a Dong village. The costumes are mostly made of the Dong cloth, which is a gift of nature, dyed a dark, rich blue, using wild plants to make indigo. Both finished cloth and cotton threads are dyed. The former becomes liangbu, while the dyed threads are often woven with white threads to create a variety of patterns. For the Dong people, liangbu has a range of meanings. It is an embodiment of life experience, as well as of wisdom derived from nature, and it helps them cope with cool, moist weather. It continues a time-honored tradition of handicrafting. And it is also a bond connecting family members across generations. As a child, I often heard my mother saying that girls needed to learn to make Dong cloth, and that anyone who didn't know how was considered incapable," says Yang Shenghua, a resident of Dali Dong village in Rongjiang county, Guizhou's Qiandongnan Miao and Dong autonomous prefecture. The  55-year-old began to learn the craft when she was about 12, under the guidance of her mother Yang Xiuying. She remembers that the process, which begins with spinning thread, was rather difficult for a young girl to learn. "I learned to weave a meter, and another meter, until I was able to produce a piece as long as my mother could make. I also went to the mountains to pick banlangen (indigo woad root), an essential ingredient in preparing the dye for the cloth," she says. The  finished dye is made using water from boiled cowhide, and egg whites. The cloth is wrung, scrubbed and pounded, before it is turned into traditional Dong garments — dark indigo outfits with a colorful flower trim for the women, plain for the men.

Carving  a story of skillChen  Yishi's presbyopic glasses magnify the Buddha emerging from beneath his chisel as he taps the tool to whittle the image into the ebony woodblock he's holding. The septuagenarian retiree from Hangji town in the outskirts of Yangzhou, East China's Jiangsu province, still takes orders and is creating the Buddha block for a cultural company in Southwest China's Sichuan province. The  craftsmanship required for the folk art, which made the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006 and was inscribed on UNESCO's list in 2009, requires not only meticulous training but also great talent. Typically, 2-centimeter-thick blocks are hewn from fine-grained pear or jujube wood before they're polished and engraved. Drafts of the words and images are then brushed onto extremely thin paper and proofed for mistakes before they're pasted onto the blocks. These designs provide guides for the artisans, who scratch them into the wood to generate the raised borders of words that will be coated with ink and then applied to paper pages.Woodblock  printing was initially used to publish Buddhist texts amid the religion's zenith in China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It's considered one of ancient China's "four great inventions", along with papermaking, gunpowder and the compass. Woodblock printing enjoyed unprecedented development in Yangzhou during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), when Emperor Kangxi commissioned an official named Cao Yin to establish the Yangzhou poetry bureau. The bureau brought skilled artisans to Yangzhou, where many quality private woodblock workshops sprung up in the following centuries. Celebrated  artisansHangji  town in particular stood out as a woodblock-printing hub. Chen's grandfather opened Hangji's biggest woodblock-printing business during the reign of Emperor Guangxu. Later, Chen's father took over the enterprise and produced many collector-grade classical books. Chen is particularly adept at the widely used Song Dynasty typeface known for its blocky, clear and balanced appearance." The most commonly used wood comes from wild fruitless pear trees," he explains. "It has a moderate hardness and fine grain, and its size doesn't change much when it's soaked or dried. These qualities make it relatively easy to carve and good for applying ink." Blocks are soaked in water for six or seven months to remove the sugar, so they don't rot or get eaten by bugs. Afterward, they're dried in the shade for a month before they're resized and reshaped. Then , a light layer of paste is slathered on the dry blocks before pieces of thin paper with written characters or sketched images are placed atop the area that will be engraved once the adhesive dries. Brushstrokes are specially executed to enable precision cutting of the blocks to ensure every character is clear and graceful.Images  are the trickiest, Chen explains. "The wood grain runs horizontally. So, when carving the expression in a person's eyes, for example, you have to pick a place to etch vertical lines, so the eyes appear particularly dark when printed to make them vivid and lively," he says. "The lines must be smooth to present the face, the hands and even the motion of the fingers."Etches  of erasWhen  Chen's father was on his deathbed, Chen promised he would carry forward the craft. His daughter, Chen Meiqi, still marvels at some of the techniques her father has mastered that virtually nobody else can execute. Chen Meiqi initially worked as a jade sculptor before her father persuaded her to instead carve woodblocks as the number of practitioners of this ancient printing method dwindled.Chen  Meiqi started with Song-type characters. "The learning process is arduous. Different fonts require different levels of detail. The Yangzhou style is especially strict because it follows imperial standards." For example, the three pointed dots in the Chinese character xin (heart) are slightly different and should take on the respective shapes of a water drip, a kidney and a melon seed, she says. "Even the slightest mistake, a literally hair-thin margin of error, can result in significant differences when printed. One faulty character renders the entire block unusable," she says. She  says she plans to propagate this craft for the rest of her life — and beyond — ensuring its legacy remains inscribed across centuries past and yet to come. "I'll do this as long as I live," she says. "And history has shown that these works, produced with special ink and paper, will last for a thousand years."

Fighting to promote a martial artAlthough  more than two years have passed, Chen Bing is still excited when he talks about the moment China's taijiquan was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on Dec 17, 2020.The  then 49-year-old was the first to appear demonstrating the classic moves of the traditional martial art, also known as tai chi, in the introduction film that was submitted to UNESCO. On its website, UNESCO describes taijiquan as "a traditional physical practice characterized by relaxed, circular movements that work in harmony with breath regulation and the cultivation of a righteous and neutral mind".Influenced  by Taoist and Confucian thoughts, and the theories of traditional Chinese medicine, the practice has developed into several schools or styles, usually named after a clan or a master, such as Chen-style and Yang-style. They are passed down generationally within the clan, or through the master-apprentice model, and are built upon the yin-and-yang cycle and the cultural understanding of the unity of heaven and humanity, according to UNESCO.Chen , one of the masters of the Chen-style taijiquan, has been practicing the martial art since he was 6 years old, under the tutelage of his uncles, Chen Xiaowang and Chen Xiaoxing, two iconic figures of Chen-style taijiquan, in Chenjiagou, Wenxian county, Central China's Henan province. "Chen-style taijiquan boasts the longest history, and other styles directly or indirectly branched out from it," Chen Bing says.Since  November, Chen Bing and 100 masters from Wenxian have been conducting classes via livestream on video-sharing mobile apps like Douyin, the Chinese iteration of TikTok, and Kuaishou, which drew in more than 400,000 viewers. Chen Bing has held nothing back in imparting his taijiquan wisdom during the online sessions.Devoted inheritorsThe  rise of Chen-style taijiquan wouldn't have happened if it weren't for the efforts of "the four tigers" — Chen Xiaowang, Chen Zhenglei, Wang Xi'an and Zhu Tiancai, all tai chi masters who were chiefly responsible for taking the family art beyond the confines of their village walls in the latter half of the 20th century.Chen  Xiaowang sums up his work as "shedding light on the mysteries of taijiquan and making them understandable in a scientific way" through his decades of practice and study. He proposes the implementation of the philosophical thought of yin and yang on mental balance and stresses that the goal of practicing taijiquan properly is to cultivate one's moral character." Taijiquan requires its practitioners to be upright and peaceful, and act from the perspective of others, which reflects Confucianism's emphasis on self-cultivation and benevolence," Chen Xiaowang explains. Moreover,  the martial art advocates using gentleness to overcome toughness, and utilizing weakness to conquer strength through one's subjective experiences and self-awareness, which is consistent with the wisdom of Taoism, according to Chen Xiaowang. Taijiquan also features the interplay between movement and stillness, emptiness and reality, opening and closing, and rigidity and gentleness, which is "a perfect embodiment of harmonious coexistence and unity in diversity", he says.Overseas followingThe  efforts of taijiquan masters like Chen Xiaowang have helped the martial art take root in foreign lands. For the past three years, come rain or shine, Ren Guangyi, one of Chen Xiaowang's disciples, has never failed to lead a dozen of his students in practicing taijiquan at Central Park in New York every Sunday. He has also been invited to give private lessons to celebrities and business tycoons, including actor Hugh Jackman and cosmetics mogul and philanthropist Leonard Lauder.Daniel  Richman is a pain management specialist who has often recommended his patients try the martial art, which significantly helped his own neck pain. Ren is snowed under with invitations to give lectures across the US and other countries. In his early years in the US, Ren says he would be out on the road for six months, demonstrating taijiquan. He  has been acutely aware of the rising popularity of taijiquan abroad, especially compared with how things were when he first arrived. "People are not strange to taijiquan and have a very high understanding of it when they approach me," Ren says. "Some of them actually already practice well and just want to refine their skills out of their fondness for the Chinese martial art," he adds.

A 'bucket list' has physical and mental advantages“遗愿清单”对身心都有好处A "bucket list" is a personal list of goals and activities someone wants to accomplish before the end of their life. Fortunately, I've been able to check off quite a lot of mine, an achievement that many people I know never get the opportunity to do.“遗愿清单”是一份个人清单,列出了某人在有生之年想要完成的目标和活动。 While most of us don't like to ponder our mortality, the hard fact is that it will come eventually. After the loss of several loved ones, I decided to make my bucket list so that, when I reflect on my life, I'll smile and know that I grabbed every chance at happiness that I could. Some of the things on my bucket list that I've achieved — hiking the Plank Road in the Sky on Mount Huashan in Shaanxi province; diving off the highest platform of 15 meters (50 feet) into the sea at Ariel's Point in Boracay, the Philippines; doing the world's highest commercial bungee jump at 233 meters off Macao Tower in the Macao Special Administrative Region; octopus fishing in the Yellow Sea off South Korea; and much more. The top item on my bucket list, however, is much more difficult to achieve. Being adopted from South Korea to the United States in 1976, I have been searching for my birth parents for the past several years. I can't help but worry that they may not still be living. But having this item at the top of my list urges me to keep trying and I'm planning to visit Seoul in October to continue the search. When I've talked about my bucket list to others, some of the feedback I've received is that it seems "a bit morbid". Like, if you have a list, you're neurotically thinking about your death. In October 2019, the American Heart Association published an article listing the emotional and physical benefits of keeping a bucket list. According to research, pre-planning trips or adventures has been linked to happiness and more positive cardiovascular health outcomes. A bucket list also prioritizes "breaks" in routine life and helps to spell out how you want to be remembered after you pass.2019年10月美国心脏协会发表了一篇文章,列出了遗愿清单对情感和身体的益处。 As you get older, the list may change. And that's OK. Whether it includes visiting certain countries, getting in better physical shape, buying a particular item or just spending more time with loved ones, there is no wrong way to do a bucket list. Your list can include short-term goals, once-in-a-lifetime experiences or just personal goals. It can give a boost to your motivation and force you to take breaks when you might not otherwise think of doing so. I consider my bucket list as a way to keep my hopes and dreams alive; a north star by which I can steer my life.

A  new start after 60: I always battled with my body image – until I became a bodybuilder at In  2021, at 64 years old, Marlene Flowers entered her first bodybuilding competition. Oiled, tanned and wearing a bikini, she found herself under bright lights on stage, twisting and contorting to show off her taut muscles alongside people half her age. Once the flexing was over, she then performed a one-minute posing routine to the theme song from Flashdance, one of her favourite films.2021年,64岁的玛琳·弗劳尔斯参加了她的第一次健美比赛。 If  you had told Flowers when she was in her 50s that she would be inviting people to judge her figure, she would have laughed in your face. She had a natural aptitude for freestyle swimming as a child, but struggled with her body image. Self-conscious and often shy, Flowers went on to marry and divorce twice. “It all affected my self-esteem and I ended up with an eating disorder for many years,” she says. “It was getting worse and worse until I was hospitalised for issues relating to my weight loss at 58. That was my wake-up call.” Once  she had built up some strength and was discharged, the youngest of her two sons, Ryan, encouraged Flowers to start taking care of her body through exercise and to see food as a way of keeping fit. He directed her towards home workout videos and after noticing that the instructor on one of the DVDs was older than her, she decided to give it a try. After  five years of home routines, Ryan eventually managed to convince Flowers to try out his local gym. Slowly building her confidence by working out with Ryan every day, Flowers started to gain muscle mass. “I wanted to push myself,” she says. “I felt stronger and other people started to notice too. They would come up and say that they wished they could have guns like mine!” The compliments sparked an idea. Ryan decided to film some of their sessions and upload them to TikTok and Instagram. After a video of Flowers flexing those guns went viral, her growing online following flooded her accounts with positive comments. She  decided to enter a bodybuilding contest as a target for her exercise regime. Now 67, Flowers has won four more bodybuilding trophies, boasts more than 1 million Instagram and TikTok followers and has gained sponsorship from clothing brand Young LA, making her the oldest sponsored female athlete in the US. She still works out every day, starting with a 10-minute ab routine and 130 pushups at home before heading to the gym for a two-hour session with Ryan, who has since left his job in business development to train his mother full-time.

WeChat groups for college students

Nineteen -year-old Yang Yucheng thought she had escaped the days when she would have to bring home her test papers for her parents to sign, after heading off to college. But when her parents revealed to her that they had already seen her results, when she returned home for a visit, she was shocked.19岁的杨雨程(音译)以为上大学以后就摆脱了带试卷回家让父母签字的日子。 Organized  by a student counselor, a WeChat group was set up for teachers and parents of students studying at the university, so that the parents could keep track of how their children were getting on. However, this practice has divided opinion and raised concerns about the data privacy of adult-age students. With  the COVID-19 pandemic making online teaching more ubiquitous among universities, teacher-parent chat groups, which are much more common among primary and secondary schools, have made their way to higher education institutions. Many  parents believe these chat groups offer them a good channel to learn about their children who are often far away from their homes, and teachers find them convenient to send notices, while students complain they are a source of anxiety and possibly a violation of their privacy. Apart  from caring about their children's daily lives at school, such as finding the nearest supermarket and where to buy clothes, parents also discuss their academic performances, employment and finding suitable relationships, stretching into the realms of helicopter parenting. Yang  Jun, a senior undergraduate student at the National University of Defense Technology in Changsha, has a similar distaste for such chat groups, though acknowledges some upsides. "My parents have learned from others how to get good grades, and which competitions I should participate in to get extra points and eventually gain admission to postgraduate studies without taking the entrance exam, something only reserved for top-ranking students," he said. Many  of the parents claim their children are not able to fend for themselves when they go off to college, with the irony being that their overindulgent parenting may be the cause of a lack of resilience. Children nowadays are not mature because they have spent most of their lives at school, with their parents and grandparents catering to their every need, one mother said. However,  a mother of a second-year college student doesn't like such chat groups, even though she's joined one. "I don't want to meddle in my daughter's life and she is capable of handling things by herself," she said. "If she wants my help or comes to me for advice or comfort, I'm always there for her. Otherwise, she needs to learn how to deal with things by herself."

Duanwu Festival and Zongzi Tale

The Zongzi tale: A taste of tradition在粽香中品味传统The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, is a significant traditional Chinese celebration that falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It is also the first Chinese festival to be included in the UNESCO world intangible cultural heritage list. One of the festival's enduring customs is eating zongzi — sweet or savory stuffed rice dumplings wrapped in plant leaves. China 's zongzi culture has a very long and time-honored history, and stories that have been told about it for thousands of years are known to every household. During  the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), a patriotic poet from the State of Chu named Qu Yuan threw himself into a river after the state was conquered. The people of Chu were deeply saddened, and they went to the river to mourn him. In order to protect his body from being eaten by fish and shrimp, people threw rice dumplings into the river every year on the anniversary of his death. The dumplings became known as zongzi. In  Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, there is another belief that people eat zongzi and watch dragon races to honor legendary military general Wu Zixu. Wu served during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), and he helped the State of Wu flourish before King Fuchai ordered his death. Local people revered his bravery and loyalty, and he has been honored in later generations. The  ingredients used to make zongzi vary from region to region, so there are many differences in shape and taste. Most are made with plain white glutinous rice. The northern varieties are usually sweet, with ingredients such as sugar, red bean paste and jujubes. On the other hand, southern zongzi are more savory — especially those from Jiaxing in Zhejiang. Jiaxing zongzi are a renowned specialty in China's Jiangnan (south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River) and have a rich history. The city, historically known as the "granary  of the nation", has been a significant rice-growing area in Chinese history. Jiaxing's savory zongzi are filled with soy sauce, pork, water chestnuts and salted duck egg yolk. The combination of high-quality ingredients and traditional cooking methods results in a delectable treat that is enjoyed by people of all ages. During  the Dragon Boat Festival, zongzi is not only enjoyed for its culinary appeal but also cherished for its cultural significance. Families and friends gather to make and share the delicious treat, strengthening bonds and fostering a sense of community. Eating zongzi during the festival is believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits, making it an essential part of the celebrations.

The policy was extended to another six countries, including Switzerland and Ireland, in March, with its expiration date extended to Dec 31. The boom in inbound tourism continued during the May Day holiday. Around 1.76 million inbound trips were made to the mainland over the five-day break, which started on May 1, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said. China has made efforts to optimize its visa issuing procedures and made some groundbreaking changes in its visa policies starting in 2023. The inbound tourism market has embraced rapid recovery since earlier this year, with the growth of international travelers from some countries exceeding our expectations," said Zhang Jinshan, a researcher on tourism planning and development at Beijing Union University.“从2023年开始,中国着力优化签证签发流程,签证政策做出了一些突破性的改变。 Zhao Jing, director of customized tours at travel portal Tuniu, said that the relaxed entry policies have also cheered up domestic tourism companies, prompting them to channel more resources into launching new products and improving services. The inbound tourism market has great potential yet to be tapped, she added. Zhang, the tourism researcher, suggested that China expand its visa-free policy to some neighboring countries, and also to countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, in order to gain a larger share in inbound tourism. In addition to improving payment, network and accommodations services for international travelers, China can channel more resources to deepen reform, enhance openness and improve the nation's image to secure the stable and sustainable development of inbound tourism, he added.

My neighbour and his little dog approached. It wasn’t long before we were both staring out at the sea, standing side by side, while our three dogs played happily. My  neighbour and I had lived beside each other in a kind of hostility of passive aggression – he, a former military man, and me, someone who had been having a mid-30s existential breakdown lasting the entire three years I lived nextdoor to him. Oh, the unmown lawns! As  the sun rose he started to tell me about how some health issues had him thinking about his father’s death, which he went on to tell me about in minute detail. By the time he ended we were both in tears: at the principled life of twists and turns his father had lived and the great dignity he had exited with. After  three years of cold war waged across a fence line, suddenly we were crying together? Over 10 years of frequenting dog parks I’ve heard people’s deepest secrets and I’ve shared mine. I’ve heard tales of marriages, affairs, troubled children, ailing parents, family feuds and work dramas. One morning I hugged someone five hours after they heard their middle-aged child had taken their own life. Like  parents watching their kids at the playground, we’re making sure our dogs aren’t acting up. It starts with normal chatter about the animals – their names, ages, eccentricities. It’s usually early in the morning, or after a long day of work, and over time those connections become more open. And safe. They’re safe because What’s Said at the Dog Park Stays at the Dog Park and 90% of us know each other only by our dog’s names.

Big city diseases should be cured one at a time大城市病应该逐一治愈China  has nearly 20 cities with a population of more than 10 million, with Chongqing, Shanghai and Beijing being the top three — each has more than 20 million residents. However, China's urbanization rate is only about 67 percent, which means nearly 500 million people still live and work in rural areas. The  government is pursuing urbanization to ensure the rural population leads a better life. China's urbanization rate had been increasing by about 1 percentage point a year for the past few decades, with even cities with a population of more than 10 million being required to open their doors wider to rural migrants. Only Beijing and Shanghai have been exceptions. The shortage of resources, and increasing traffic jams and pollution have prompted the two cities to strengthen city regulations. Besides , reports say nearly 70 percent of the water consumed by Beijing residents is diverted from southern China through a number of channels, and the 7.54 million vehicles in Beijing are causing massive traffic jams while rising human activities are harming the local environment and increasing air pollution. To  treat the big city diseases, a decision was made about 10 years ago to move some non-capital functions out of urban Beijing. A modern sub-center has been built in eastern Beijing to accommodate local municipal departments and institutions, and by the end of last year some 30,000 municipal staff members had been moved there. Besides , a new city, Xiong'an New Area, about 100 kilometers south of Beijing is being built to accommodate the headquarters of big companies, branches of universities, research institutions and other organizations, and house about 1 million people in the early stage. Over the past decade, more than 1,000 logistics centers and wholesale-cum-retail markets have been moved out of Beijing, including the well-known Zoo Wholesale Market, whose original sit e has been turned into a scientific innovation center. These  measures have worked because Beijing has managed to keep its population at 21 million for some years. In fact, the moves to relocate non-capital functions out of Beijing, along with other measures such as building more subways and encouraging the use of electric cars, have eased the city's traffic problem and improved its air quality. But now that other cities are luring talents with preferential policies, the capital should try to maintain its luster by introducing more policies that are attractive to both domestic and overseas talents. Having  lived in Beijing for more than four decades and being used to the hustle and bustle of the city, I cannot afford to imagine a day when I, as an old man, am walking alone in a street, trying to find someone to ask my way back home. This is something I actually experienced in the Australian capital of Canberra. I hope that doesn't happen in Beijing.

Zibo retains its unique flavor among tourists淄博在游客心中仍保有特色Famed  city of BBQ trying to go beyond culinary delights to attract more visitors in long run著名的“烧烤之都”正开发美食以外的资源,从长远上吸引更多游客As  the aroma from grilled lamb skewers amid sizzling charcoal fires fills the air, the local people of Zibo and tourists alike are indulging in the culinary delights of the city's bustling barbecue scene. With small grills fired up and tables running full, the barbecue fever remains ablaze even in spring, turning the city in Shandong province once again into a hot spot for gastronomic delights. This  has also concurrently spurred growth in tourism, injecting fresh impetus into the economic development of the industrial city. The popularity index of Zibo surged 137 percent year-on-year during this year's Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year holiday, making it a magnet for tourists, latest data from online travel agency LY.com showed. In  March last year, driven by the allure of barbecue skewers wrapped with small pancakes — a traditional way of consuming barbecue in Zibo — tourists from all over the country flocked to the city. Soon, reports of how travelers stuck in Zibo amid COVID-19 restrictions had been accommodated nicely by the local government and businesses added to its appeal. However , the fervor for barbecue in Zibo cooled in the latter half of the year, characterized by a decline in the number of new barbecue restaurants. The city saw 69 out of the 839 newly established enterprises in Zibo winding up by November last year, said a report by media Yicai. Zibo  is actively seeking ways to convert the current visitor traffic into a long-term development stimulus and promote the growth of other industries. By exploring its cultural heritage and investing in tourism, Zibo is injecting fresh vitality into its economic landscape. The  district of Linzi in Zibo served as the ancient capital of the Qi state during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) and the Warring States Period (475-221 BC). The district boasts numerous historical sites such as the Chariot and Horse Museum. Local authorities and businesses are intensifying efforts to develop a range of products and services related to Qi culture to enrich the tourist experience. Many barbecue restaurant owners in our courtyard hope that Zibo's culture and tourism will gain traction. We feel that many visitors, after trying Zibo's barbecue, might not return to the city solely for the barbecue again. However, if the city offers other attractions, such as historical sites, it can transform the short-term influx into long-term visits," said Zhang of Zibo Big Chimney Grilled Fish & Barbecue.“我们院子里的很多烧烤店老板都希望淄博的文化和旅游能够得到拉动。

China's vibrant elderly

China's vibrant elderly

Exploring the vibrant life of China's elderly探索中国老年人的活力生活Before I came to China last autumn, I had spent several years studying Chinese language and culture, and I felt like I had a good overview of what might surprise me after moving here. However, certain things always managed to evade the scope of textbooks and television shows. For example, I was shocked by the vibrant life of the elderly and the differences in culture between the younger and older generations in China. It's not just the natural variances in their daily routines and lifestyles, which are to be expected anywhere in the world. There is something much more prominent: how different age groups interact with public spaces. During my routine strolls around the neighborhood, I would often stumble upon scenes that diverged from my expectations. I might encounter someone cooking a meal on a portable gas stove placed in the middle of the pavement. Sometimes, I might stop and join a crowd gathered around a chess or card game. Then there were the occasions where I would pass by individuals taking afternoon naps on a bench, watching TV dramas with blaring speakers, or simply listening to classical music on a radio. Remarkably, the one common aspect of all these experiences is that they are all from the older generation. All of these activities, which make good use of public spaces, truly embody the term "public space". The younger generation in China, however, is less likely to partake in this form of public life to the same extent. That is not to say there aren't young people out in public spaces, but rather that they don't utilize these spaces in the same manner. Norwegian culture is more reserved, and this becomes even more evident regarding older generations. When taking a walk in the park in Norway, for instance, you will see fewer elders engaged in social activities or exercise routines than in China. Of course, the elderly in Norway do socialize, but not like their counterparts in China. My conclusion when comparing these two cultures is that Chinese elders are far more socially active, and they fully embrace the concept of public space. There is a saying in Norway that states, "We are all children of our time", meaning that we are all shaped by the time and space in which we grew up. When considering the drastic changes and rapid development of China in the past century, it is no wonder that the social lives and cultural practices of its younger and older generations are so divergent. Each generation in China grew up in a vastly different socio-economic landscape, and they are shaped by these landscapes. This disparity is much more prominent than that in Norway, which has experienced relatively small social changes within the same time span.

Song lyrics getting simpler, more repetitive, angry and self-obsessed – study研究发现,歌词变得更加简单、重复、愤怒以及自恋Researchers analysed the words in more than 12,000 English-language songs across several genres from 1980 to You’re not just getting older. Song lyrics really are becoming simpler and more repetitive, according to a study published on Thursday. Lyrics have also become angrier and more self-obsessed over the last 40 years, the study found, reinforcing the opinions of cranky ageing music fans everywhere. A team of European researchers analysed the words in more than 12,000 English-language songs across the genres of rap, country, pop, R&B and rock from 1980 to 2020. Before detailing how lyrics have become more basic, the study pointed out that US singer-songwriting legend Bob Dylan – who rose to fame in the 1960s – has won a Nobel prize in literature. Senior study author Eva Zangerle, an expert on recommendation systems at Austria’s University of Innsbruck, declined to single out an individual newer artist for having simple lyrics. But she emphasised that lyrics can be a “mirror of society” which reflect how a culture’s values, emotions and preoccupations change over time. “What we have also been witnessing in the last 40 years is a drastic change in the music landscape – from how music is sold to how music is produced,” Zangerle said. Over the 40 years studied, there was repeated upheaval in how people listened to music. The vinyl records and cassette tapes of the 1980s gave way to the CDs of the 90s, then the arrival of the internet led to the algorithm-driven streaming platforms of today.“在过去40年里,我们还目睹了音乐领域的巨大变化——从音乐的销售方式到音乐的制作方式,” 赞格勒说。 The researchers looked at the emotions expressed in lyrics, how many different and complicated words were used, and how often they were repeated. “Across all genres, lyrics had a tendency to become more simple and more repetitive,” Zangerle summarised. The results also confirmed previous research which had shown a decrease in positive, joyful lyrics over time and a rise in those that express anger, disgust or sadness. Lyrics have also become much more self-obsessed, with words such as “me” or “mine” becoming much more popular. The researchers also investigated which songs the fans of different genres looked up on the lyric website Genius. Unlike other genres, rock fans most often looked up lyrics from older songs, rather than new ones. Rock has tumbled down the charts in recent decades, and this could suggest fans are increasingly looking back to the genre’s heyday, rather than its present. Another way that music has changed is that the first 10-15 seconds are highly decisive for whether we skip the song or not, Zangerle said. Put simply, songs with more choruses that repeat basic lyrics appear to be more popular.

New Chinese-style Wellness

China's urban youth are exploring unique ways to stay healthy within their fast-paced lives中国的城市年轻人正在快节奏生活中探索保持健康的独特方式On the yoga mat, in the soothing waters of a spa pool, sipping on a warm drink from a thermos filled with red dates and wolfberries, or enjoying the comforting warmth of an electric foot bath — these are just some of the unique ways the new generation of young people are embracing the pursuit of wellness. As the pursuit of wellness becomes an essential pastime for many young people, a trend known as "New Chinese-style Wellness" has taken over social media platforms. Wellness, or yangsheng in Mandarin, is no longer a term exclusive to the middle-aged and elderly. Faced with intense competition in education and their careers, those born in the 1990s and 2000s have already embarked on a journey to safeguard their health. The concept of "New Chinese-style Wellness "emphasizes the idea of dietary therapy, advocating for the consumption of fresh, natural ingredients, balanced meals and exercising moderation in the consumption of oily and spicy foods, essentially maintaining a light and nutritious diet. Additionally, it promotes mental well-being by incorporating traditional Chinese medicine theories to regulate emotions and achieve a balanced development of physical and mental health. Furthermore, it advocates for light exercise, such as tai chi, to strengthen the body and achieve the goal of wellness and fitness.“新中式养生”理念强调食疗理念,提倡食材新鲜天然,讲究膳食均衡,少食油腻辛辣,以清淡营养为主。 Twenty-nine-year-old Tang Siyu, employed at an insurance company, is among those who have adopted a routine of carrying a large thermos flask into the office daily. With a regular bedtime of around 11 pm and an early wake-up time of 6:20 am to walk her dog, Tang ensures she engages in physical exercise four to five times per week. Having a balanced and healthy diet has always been important to me. I grew up drinking health tonics following my mother's advice, and now I continue to prioritize my health based on my own preferences," says Tang, who traces her habits back to her college days, when she was greatly influenced by her mother, a nutritionist. Different from her mother's approach to health, which involves seasonal herbal remedies for tonifying the liver in spring and treating winter ailments in summer, like many other young people, Tang enjoys drinking milk tea and indulging in meals with friends. However, she opts for sugar-free milk tea and avoids excessive food intake.“均衡健康的饮食对我来说一直很重要。 In recent years, a new term has quietly emerged among young people — "punk wellness". Staying up late, applying the most expensive face masks, and using the most expensive eye creams; putting wolfberries in beer, or pairing ice cream with blood sugar-lowering pills. Overall, its subtle popularity reflects the attention and concerns that young people have about their own health conditions, albeit with a somewhat exaggerated sense of rectification.

Australian  Alps face world’s largest loss of snow by end of century, research shows研究显示,到本世纪末澳大利亚阿尔卑斯山面临最大积雪消融量Study  of global heating finds snowfall in Victoria and New South Wales could decline much faster than in other alpine areas around the world全球变暖研究发现,维多利亚州和新南威尔士州的降雪量下降速度可能比世界其他高山地区快得多Global  heating will cause snow cover in the Australian Alps to decline by 78% by the end of the century – much faster than the declines assessed in six other major skiing regions, new research has found. The  study published today by researchers from Germany’s University of Bayreuth cautioned about the quickening consequences of the climate crisis, predicting 13% of ski areas across the globe may lose all natural snow cover in a future with high emissions. “Within this century, ongoing climate change will globally lead to a substantial reduction in annual snow cover days in current ski areas under all emissions scenarios,” the study said. “We project a considerable increase in ski areas completely lacking snow in the future.” The  study focused on seven major mountainous skiing regions, including the European Alps, Andes, Appalachian Mountains, Australian Alps, Japanese Alps, Southern Alps, and Rocky Mountains. For each it assessed the consequences of three climate change scenarios: “low” “high” and “very high” emissions. Under all three, annual snow cover days across the seven major mountain areas with downhill skiing will significantly decrease worldwide. “Under a high emissions scenario, ski areas in the southern hemisphere … will be most severely affected by climate change,” the study reads. Australia ’s 78% rate of decline ranks by far the highest of the major skiing regions assessed, which include the European Alps at 42%, Japanese Alps at 50% and Southern Alps of New Zealand at 51%. Ski areas located in highly populated areas are predicted to be more affected by global warming, the study said, adding that the economic profitability of ski resorts around the globe may fall as a consequence of the decline in snow cover. The  study anticipated technical and management strategies like artificial snow making will presumably not be a sufficient compensation measure under a severe climate change scenario, despite being widely used at present to alleviate snow scarcity. “Snow resorts may need to move or expand into less populated mountain areas at higher elevations to combat the effects of climate change,” the study found. “These findings are socioeconomically and ecologically concerning.” That’s  because strategies such as slope contouring, landscaping, and developing new ski areas on north facing and higher elevated slopes are considered threats to nature and the unique mountainous biodiversity. While skiing and its touristic value are of great importance for local economies, “biodiversity in mountainous areas is already heavily affected by global warming,” the study said.
