Eric N. Mack and X Zhu-Nowell, Director and Chief Curator of Rockbund Art Museum. Ahead of RAM’s new exhibition The Great Camouflage, Eric travelled from New York to Shanghai for nearly a month-long residency. From wandering the streets, taking the metro, observing local tailors at work, to encountering the city’s textures, colors, and light, every experience became an entry point into perceiving space. As an artist whose practice uses textiles, light, and spatial composition as the foundations of painting, Eric discusses how he transforms everyday materials—silk, blankets, hammocks—into paintings and installations that carry “weight,” “transparency,” and a sense of “breath.” He shares how light becomes a “brushstroke,” and how the movement of viewers becomes a new mode of “composition.”Beyond art, he also reflects on his deep connections to the fashion world—from Virgil Abloh to Grace Wales Bonner, and his collaboration with Chinese designer brand SAMUEL GUÌ YANG—and how these cross-disciplinary energies, in turn, nourish his work.01:47 Eric’s dynamic experiences in Shanghai: where culture meets creation 06:04 What painting means to Eric N.
