In 1858, havingrecently been sold down theSavannah river and parted from his family, AbreamScriven wrote the following heartbreaking letter to his wife.

1858年，因为被贩卖到萨凡纳河下游而被迫离开家人，阿布里姆·斯克里文给妻子写下了这封悲伤欲绝的信。

Her subsequentattempts to have her husband bought back by another slave owner failed; theynever saw each other again.

妻子随后多次尝试通过另外一位奴隶主把丈夫买回身边，但都以失败告终，他们此生不复相见。

Sept the 19. 1858

1858年9月19日

Dinah Jones, mydear wife, I take the pleasure of writing you these few lines with much regretto inform you that I am sold to a man by the name of Peterson a trader and staysin new Orleans.

I am here yet butI expect to go before long. When I get there, I will write and let you knowwhere I am. My dear I want to send you some things but I do not know who to sendthem by, but I will try to get them to you and my children. Give my love to myfather & mother and tell them good-bye for me.

黑奴制度

在奴隶制度下，黑人受到极为残酷的剥削和压迫，繁重的劳动，非人的生活待遇，监工的摧残和虐待，使一个健壮的黑人只消在种植园里劳动6、7年，就耗尽了体力，成为残废，很快死去。黑人奴隶，不断奋起反抗，独立战争以前，单是有文字记载的起义至少有50次以上，黑人的斗争给美国黑奴制度以沉重打击。这就是黑奴制度。

在英属北美殖民地创建之初，急需大批劳力，欧洲殖民者便从非洲拐骗、劫掠黑人到新大陆作为奴隶役使。1619年荷兰人首先把20名黑奴运到弗吉尼亚的詹姆斯城，卖给英国殖民者。最初，黑人数量较少，到17世纪中叶不过 300人，其法律身份也不确定。17世纪下半叶，各殖民地先后制定法律，确定了黑人的奴隶身份。黑奴制度继承了古代奴隶制的野蛮传统。

黑人是会说话的工具，是主人活的财产。1709年，纽约华尔街出现了大规模拍卖黑奴的市场。北美独立战争前夕，黑奴总数已近50万，约占各殖民地人口的 1/7。在英属北美13个殖民地都有黑奴，但主要集中在南部种植园，生产棉花、烟草、稻米和靛青，供应世界市场需要。黑奴的劳动奠定了南部经济生活的基础，是美国资本原始积累的源泉之一。同时残酷的奴隶贸易也使北部新英格兰的航海业和商业等部门得到发展。后来林肯总统签订了条约，取消了这一制度。
