Wuthering Heights is a novel by Emily Brontë published in 1847 under her pseudonym "Ellis Bell". Brontë's only finished novel, it was written between October 1845 and June 1846. Wuthering Heights and Anne Brontë's Agnes Grey were accepted by publisher Thomas Newby before the success of her sister Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre. After Emily's death, Charlotte edited a posthumous second edition in 1850. Boston englishEnglish Learning
The Age of Innocence is a 1920 novel by American author Edith Wharton. It was her twelfth novel, and was initially serialized in 1920 in four parts, in the magazine Pictorial Review. Later that year, it was released as a book by D. Appleton & Company. It won the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, making Wharton the first woman to win the prize.Though the committee had initially agreed to give the award to Sinclair Lewis for Main Street, the judges, in rejecting his book on political grounds, "established Wharton as the American 'First Lady of Letters'".[2] The story is set in the 1870s, in upper-class, "Gilded-Age" New York City.
From , the free encyclopediaHow Ahikar Outwitted the King of Egypt (Henry Justice Ford)The Story of Ahiqar, also known as the Words of Ahikar, is a story first attested in Aramaic from the fifth century BCE that circulated widely in the Middle and Near East. It has been characterised as "one of the earliest 'international books' of world literature".The principal character is the Aramean Ahiqar (Aramaic: אחיקר, also transliterated as Aḥiqar, Arabic Hayqar, Greek Achiacharos and variants on this theme such as Armenian: Խիկար Xikar), a sage known in the ancient Near East for his outstanding wisdom.
This lecture describes the earliest written evidence for King Arthur. This evidence is limited to a few brief references to a battle between Britons and Saxons and someone named Arthur who was a battlefield commander but not a king. This doesn't leave us with much evidence for the Arthur we know from literature, but that's how narrative works.
This lecture traces the most familiar themes and story elements of the legend of King Arthur--including chivalry, courtly love, the Round Table, the Holy Grail, Excalibur, Merlin, Lancelot, and Gawain--from their first appearance in the literature to Sir Thomas Malory's 1485 edition of Le Morte D'Arthur.

We tend to think of narrative as deliberate, artistic way of redescribing something real or imagined. However, psychologists have consistently found that all of our thinking--even thoughts that we think of as literally true--are more narrative than reality. That's not to say that they are false, just that they ignore some facts, select others, overgeneralize these facts, and weave them together with preconceived assumptions rather than direct observation. While these narratives are more salient and memorable than pure facts, they can easily deceive us into thinking that our preconceptions come from the world rather than from our own imaginations. This is a phenomenon that economist Nassim Taleb calls "the narrative fallacy." One way that fictional narratives can help us overcome the narrative fallacy is by showing us how strange familiar situations can look if our prejudices and stereotypes are taken away.
德克萨斯A&M大学(Texas A&M University)大学教授Eric Luttrell讲解希腊神话故事普罗米修斯。This is the third video lecture for Unit 5: Prometheus. It focuses Aeschylus' play, Prometheus Bound. In it, I discuss a brief history of ancient Greek drama, Aeschylus' historical context, and the emergence of philosophical inquiry in 5th century Athens. I contrast Aeschylus' dramatic use of theory-of-mind with Hesiod's authoritarianism and propose that this psychological difference lies behind Aeschylus' elevation of Prometheus to a heroic figure (in contrast to Hesiod's condemnation of Prometheus as a disobedient subordinate).Links to texts: Hesiod's Works and Days: http://www.theoi.com/Text/HesiodWorks... It focuses on selections from Hesiod's poems "Works and Days" and "The Theogony" that deal with Prometheus and Pandora. In particular, I examine the psychology of authoritarianism that underlies Hesiod's view of a cosmic hierarchy that is ordered by the power and will of Zeus. This includes a brief discussion of 20th and 21st century psychological studies of authoritarianism which have been repeated across cultures, indicating that this way of thinking does not originate from individual cultures but is likely a part of our evolutionary psychology. It helps to explain why Hesiod condemns Prometheus' support for humanity as futile and harmful in the face of Zeus' right-of-might.Links to texts: Hesiod's Works and Days: http://www.theoi.com/Text/HesiodWorks... How the ancient Greeks understood the universe; what they got right and what they got wrong. How Aristotle understood the Earth was round by observing lunar eclipses; how Aristarchus of Samos used these results to work out the relative sizes of Earth, the Sun, and Moon, how Eratosthenes of Cyrene measured Earth's circumference, and how Hipparchus of Nicaea determined created the first catalog of stars and discovered Earth's 26,000 year axial precession, Finally, we take a look at Claudius Ptolemy's collection of works in the Almagest, and how he came up with a system of epicycles to explain planets' retrograde motion.
