Thanksgiving Special: Marseille madness, the Portland Crew, & John Anderson

Thanksgiving Special: Marseille madness, the Portland Crew, & John Anderson

Epic PotT warning: this episode comes in at a whopping 70 minutes before ads. Is it worth it? Who knows, but it's got everything. There's heartfelt emotion as George checks in with family and friends in Portland, Oregon, and David Hopkinson gives thanks for the West Coast massive. There's more reaction to madcap football and unpleasant policing in Marseille, where Eddie Howe's Champions League Mags shot themselves in the pied. Will Nick Pope keep his place? There's a bona fide club legend on the show as Chris catches up with one of the latest entrants to the Hall of Fame, John Anderson. And, there's intrigue, as we look ahead to a new era for Newcastle's women under Tanya Oxtoby, and hope beyond hope for an away win in the Premier League... ...and breathe.

Eddie Howe's proper headscratching reset

Eddie Howe's proper headscratching reset

He's had a magnificent run as Newcastle manager, so much so we made a documentary about it (if you didn't know). But, the challenges keep coming for Eddie Howe; this season's Premier League form, especially away from St James's Park, needs a fresh approach. Lisa Mole was, not too long ago, ratified as the Chair of Newcastle United Supporters' Trust. She already has a new CEO with which she hopes to build channels of communication, and she answers your questions on ticketing, membership, and more. To join NUST, go to their website. For more info, and to subscribe to Pod on the Tyne: EXTRA Tyne, go to podonthetyne.supportingcast.fm. IN TERMS OF tickets to our live show at the Gosforth Civic Theatre, Supporting Cast members get an exclusive window to purchase from 10am on Friday November 14th, and they will then go on general sale on Monday 17th November, again at 10am. Ridiculous to sublime: Burn's heady header eases pain of Hammer horror

Ridiculous to sublime: Burn's heady header eases pain of Hammer horror

Newcastle United delivered a routine Champions League win and, at the halfway point in the first stage, they are sixth in the League league. The headlines were all about a header on Wednesday night after Dan Burn met Kieran Trippier's elegant set-piece delivery, putting a beautiful bit of swazz on a fifteen-yard nut... we grabbed Sir Les Ferdinand (!) for some expert analysis. It all pushed the terror of West Ham away to the back of our minds for a brief spell, but with a trip to Brentford coming up this weekend, the Premier League PTSD is kicking in. Away from the football, Chief Commercial Officer Peter Silverstone will be swapping the black and white of Newcastle for Turin when he joins Juventus after serving a period of gardening leave. Revenues have trebled under his watch, but could more have been achieved?

Carabao characters: Newcastle loving the league cup

Carabao characters: Newcastle loving the league cup

Hallowe'en it may be, but love is in the air on Pod on the Tyne this week. George loves the pub. "Don't we all!?" you say. Not this much. He REALLY loves the pub. Eddie Howe's team love the league cup, and they love beating Spurs at St James's Park. They usually love going to West Ham as well (fingers crossed). Taylor loves Sandro Tonali. And Fabian Schar. And Bruno. And the rest of them, tbf. But, mostly he loves Sandro Tonali. Newcastle's three sporting titans, the Magpies, the Eagles, and the F... Red Bulls, put together what (in the interests of a convoluted metaphor) we're loosely calling a coach-matchmaking service to share tips and tricks as they develop the next generation of Northeast sporting talent. Chris loves sausages.

Wilson arrives, Academy in focus, Lasses draw with Bristol

Wilson arrives, Academy in focus, Lasses draw with Bristol

Another weekly Pod on the Tyne rolls around and, with many of the lads away on international duty, you'd think it'd be a quiet one. How wrong you are, friend! Newcastle United now have a CEO AND a Sporting Director after they agreed a deal to bring Nottingham Forest's Ross Wilson to the North East. Chris has all the gen on our new football supremo. Our Athletic duo (the capital A is crucial) have been working incredibly hard putting together an in-depth written article on the current state of the club's academy. George actually had to have the day off from podcasting today, but not before he delivered us a very interesting conversation with Steve Harper. The Lasses (TM) are winless at home, which nobody expected in October, but all is not lost. George was at the Gateshead International Stadium on Sunday to see how the much-changed squad is coming together. Chris is off to Brighton again this week, but he isn't taking his light sabre this time.

Matchday PotT: Forest (h), Bruno and Nick deliver "huge" win

Matchday PotT: Forest (h), Bruno and Nick deliver "huge" win

Plenty of intriguing angles going into Newcastle United v Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. Both teams played in Europe in midweek, Ange Postecoglu under pressure just three weeks into his new job, and the home attack struggling to spark… …Not that Nick Woltemade’s stats would fit that particular narrative. A penalty saw the German forward score in each of his first three home games for Newcastle, becoming just the third man to do so after Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand. It was Bruno who broke the deadlock with a curled effort after good work from Dan Burn, and a 2-0 win rounded off a great week for the lads. ...A better result for The Lasses™, too, although they left it very late indeed at Crystal Palace. Trailing 2-0 with ten minutes of normal time; Oona Sevenius opened her Newcastle account before Morgan Gautrat's Olimpico hit the net eight minutes into injury time!

What is this version of Newcastle United?

What is this version of Newcastle United?

Recorded a mere 24 hours after the snore-fest at the Vitality Stadium, with George barely back through the marble portico which fronts Caulkin Manor, we're already moving on to a new week and yet more interesting football challenges. League One leaders Bradford City will be the visitors in the Carabao Cup as Eddie Howe's Newcastle begin their first defence of a trophy since 1969-70. Then, Arsenal's Mikel Arteta wheels up the Gunners for another potshot at his nemeses this weekend. The LassesTM had a difficult time at Birmingham on Sunday. Three-nil down after forty minutes, they salvaged some pride in the second half but will want to kickstart their campaign quickly. The retirement of Su Cumming was also announced this week; she's served Newcastle with distinction for a decade, but has dedicated her many talents to women's football across the North East for much longer.

W for Victory: Wissa or Woltemade v Wolves?

W for Victory: Wissa or Woltemade v Wolves?

A little boutique edition of your favourite Newcastle United podcast this week as: a) it's been a men's international week and, 2) the Great North Run clashed with the women's fixture, so nobody's watched any live football at all. There was plenty of interesting stuff going on in the international fixtures, if you like that sort of thing, with Newcastle players starring for England, Italy, Brazil, and Dr. Congo... The Lasses (TM) also had a good weekend, winning their league opener at Forest; they will face the Blades at home (in Gateshead) next. The Premier League returns this weekend and, with Howe's men yet to get a win in the league this season, we have high hopes of giving Wolves the run-around. But, who will the manager entrust with a start "up top"?!

NUFC's new CEO: David Hopkinson + WSL Preview

NUFC's new CEO: David Hopkinson + WSL Preview

Newcastle United have appointed David Hopkinson as their new CEO to replace the outgoing Darren Eales. David arrives with a powerful reputation in business built in his hometown of Toronto as well as New York and Madrid. It's been a tumultuous year at executive level and we welcome David's leadership although time will be a finite resource as he gets up to speed. While the process has taken almost a year, we're hoping we've got the right man to work with Eddie Howe and other senior executives, including whoever comes in as Director of Football. Becky Langley is the ever-present force of leadership behind Newcastle's women and, with a rapidly evolving squad of players*, she is ready and raring to go as they approach a hugely important WSL2 campaign. *a bit too rapidly for this podcast!
