It was important to get a win against Burnley for a few reasons; to banish the memory of Spurs' twin-equalisers, to carry momentum into a big week, and to climb the Premier League table. Did Howe's much-changed eleven and squad, boosted by the first appearance from Yoane Wissa, do all of that? Maybe not quite, but they won the game. From a sluggish start, through Bruno's Olimpico and Gordon's livewire performance, to Wissa's reception and the late drama, it was the least routine routine win.
It's the morning after the night before the night before; Taylor and Ollie backed up a winning appearance at the FSA awards with Spurs on telly in the pub (yay!), but we're feeling the worse for wear now. It didn't help that Cristian Romero equalised twice for Spurs last night, once with a great header and then again with a miserable overhead kick that dribbled agonisingly past defensive statues. It's been 84 years (well, seven months) but Newcastle United have won away in the Premier League, and in some style. Malick Thiaw scored his first (and second) goal for the club, Lewis Miley scored and assisted, and Nick Woltemade iced the cake with a sumptuous finish. Newcastle United returned to Premier League action after the November international break with a host of problems and worries echoing in supporters' memories. The return of our dynamic fullback duo would help, and the manager has had a good spell reviewing those stuttering early-season performances in minute detail. In Howe we trust, of course, but it would be too much to ask for a win against second-placed City, his personal nemesis. OR WOULD IT!?!?!

A much-changed squad struggled to assert themselves in WSL2 with promotion the clearly-stated aim, but a big win in the derby game at St James's Park will go a long way to galvanising the mood on Tyneside. It's the last international break in the men's game until March, and Eddie Howe's squad will have to refocus on Premier League football with a busy spell over the next few weeks. It would be fair to say this isn't the way Eddie Howe would have liked to mark his fourth anniversary at Newcastle United. The manager who finally ended the club's trophy drought and brought top-tier European football back to the North East has solved pretty much every problem presented to him since taking over, but there IS one exception. The international break feels like it has come at the right time for most of our squad; poor old Nick Pope, perhaps not. Will we see significant changes to how the team approach away games when domestic football returns?
Newcastle United delivered a routine Champions League win and, at the halfway point in the first stage, they are sixth in the League league. The headlines were all about a header on Wednesday night after Dan Burn met Kieran Trippier's elegant set-piece delivery, putting a beautiful bit of swazz on a fifteen-yard nut... we grabbed Sir Les Ferdinand (!) for some expert analysis. It all pushed the terror of West Ham away to the back of our minds for a brief spell, but with a trip to Brentford coming up this weekend, the Premier League PTSD is kicking in. Away from the football, Chief Commercial Officer Peter Silverstone will be swapping the black and white of Newcastle for Turin when he joins Juventus after serving a period of gardening leave. Revenues have trebled under his watch, but could more have been achieved?
We haven't felt like this in a while; perhaps not since West Ham (h) last season. It's possible today was even worse than that. Was it our worst performance under Howe? Despite playing a team incapable of winning at home, despite the air of mutiny amongst home fans in Stratford, despite going the length of the field in 26 seconds to take the lead after Bowen hit the post early, Newcastle somehow contrived to lose on the road again! There's bad, then there's worse, then there's several hundred feet of excrement, and then this. Commence the inquest.

Newcastle after a Champions League fixture; not a pretty story on the whole. That's not to say they painted a beautiful picture on Saturday at St James's Park, but they got the job done. Captain Bruno arrived late in the box, late in the day, to follow up Osula's saved effort and find the corner. It provides a huge boost to a team still finding its feet this season, and hopefully a platform for a fruitful trio of games against London teams.

Newcastle returned to Brighton's Amex Arena on the south coast (as did Chris Waugh) and their rotten record continues despite the best efforts of Nick Woltemade. A poor first half saw Howe's men trailing, but the giant german produced a moment of golden-heeled inspiration to equalise. Sadly, that was the extent of Geordie joy on the day; Danny Welbeck got his second to restore the lead and the hosts held on for all three points. George was at the Gateshead International Stadium on Sunday to see how the much-changed squad is coming together. Chris is off to Brighton again this week, but he isn't taking his light sabre this time.
The September international break is an absurdity; great to see that (after George's comments on a recent PotT) the authorities are doing away with it (definitely related). But, the October break has a different feel. We're almost quarter of the way through the season... the Champions League campaign has started, and Newcastle players are dropping like flies. It's not the same as our last European adventure, though. Eddie Howe's squad is a little deeper, giving us a bit more flexibility and, unlike the start of the season, we have a striker. So, what do we make of the season so far? Let's find out.
Plenty of intriguing angles going into Newcastle United v Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. Both teams played in Europe in midweek, Ange Postecoglu under pressure just three weeks into his new job, and the home attack struggling to spark… …Not that Nick Woltemade’s stats would fit that particular narrative. A penalty saw the German forward score in each of his first three home games for Newcastle, becoming just the third man to do so after Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand. It was Bruno who broke the deadlock with a curled effort after good work from Dan Burn, and a 2-0 win rounded off a great week for the lads. ...A better result for The Lasses™, too, although they left it very late indeed at Crystal Palace. Trailing 2-0 with ten minutes of normal time; Oona Sevenius opened her Newcastle account before Morgan Gautrat's Olimpico hit the net eight minutes into injury time!
Newcastle United haven't scored many goals so far this season, especially away from home, but on Wednesday night they put four past Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise and with relative ease. Nick Woltemade has been the source of some "salty" comments from Bayern-related figures over the last few days, but he opened the scoring with a deft flick which he definitely meant. Anthony Gordon scored two penalties and sub Harvey Barnes completed the rout, while Elanga was a threat all evening. In terms of The Lasses, it's been a tough start to the season and they travel to Palace on Sunday to face last season's WSL basement club. The Lads, meanwhile, face Forest who have a familiar figure running the show in midfield.

Heartbreak at St James's as Mikel Arteta's Gunners laid siege to Newcastle's wall of giant defenders and were able to break them down twice to take all three points back to North London. Chances were few and far between for the home side but Nick Woltemade did make the most of a corner he had earned and kept up his 100% record of headed-league-goals-at-SJP. George and Chris convened outside the Strawberry to reflect on all that, some controversial decisions, and another defeat for The Lasses (TM) who are hopefully emerging from their own teething problems.
The Bantams of Bradford came to St James's Park on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for them, Newcastle United are now heavyweights, especially in the Carabao Cup. Our defence of the trophy began in deliriously routine style despite a rocky spell early doors and a spectacular hit by Bishop Auckland's Andy Cook. With a one-two from Joelinton and Will Osula in either half, it was a comfortable evening in the end and we roll on to Spurs in round 4. Ding ding!
Recorded a mere 24 hours after the snore-fest at the Vitality Stadium, with George barely back through the marble portico which fronts Caulkin Manor, we're already moving on to a new week and yet more interesting football challenges. League One leaders Bradford City will be the visitors in the Carabao Cup as Eddie Howe's Newcastle begin their first defence of a trophy since 1969-70. Then, Arsenal's Mikel Arteta wheels up the Gunners for another potshot at his nemeses this weekend. The LassesTM had a difficult time at Birmingham on Sunday. Three-nil down after forty minutes, they salvaged some pride in the second half but will want to kickstart their campaign quickly. The retirement of Su Cumming was also announced this week; she's served Newcastle with distinction for a decade, but has dedicated her many talents to women's football across the North East for much longer.
Eddie Howe’s record with Newcastle against his old side AFC Bournemouth is, it’s fair to say, not a proud one. Less than 72 hours after an emotionally charged Champions League fixture against Barcelona, the trip to the Vitality Stadium looked a tricky one; especially with the Cherries having won three of their first four Premier League fixtures. In that context, a 0-0 draw doesn’t sound like a terrible result. It was quite a good result, in fact, built on another solid defensive performance. However, there are plenty of questions about how Newcastle will score goals in the post-I**k era.
Here we go again... Champions League football returns to St James's Park with all the hallmarks of elite European competition... big name players... athleticism... skill... and, of course, tabards. But is it different this time? The arrival of Barcelona brings with it incredible memories, of course, but Newcastle's history in this tournament is just that; a series of great moments. Can we string them together this year and build a memorable campaign? Even **spoiler alert** defeat in this opener doesn't represent a disaster. The new format allows for multiple slip-ups in its league phase. What we must do, though, is follow up with a positive result at Bournemouth.

Newcastle returned to Premier League action, after the ludicrously early September international break, needing to beat bottom-placed Wolves to notch their first win of the season. They would have to do so without two big new signings; young midfielder Jacob Ramsey and £55m centre-forward Yoanne Wissa. Ramsey is out for about a month, while Wissa faces an unspecified period out with a knee injury. Step forward Nick Woltemade! The German giant isn't a natural target man, we're told, but that didn't look to be the case when he leapt Asprilla-like to nod home a Jacob Murphy cross just 30 minutes into his debut. A little boutique edition of your favourite Newcastle United podcast this week as: a) it's been a men's international week and, 2) the Great North Run clashed with the women's fixture, so nobody's watched any live football at all. There was plenty of interesting stuff going on in the international fixtures, if you like that sort of thing, with Newcastle players starring for England, Italy, Brazil, and Dr. Congo... The Lasses (TM) also had a good weekend, winning their league opener at Forest; they will face the Blades at home (in Gateshead) next. The Premier League returns this weekend and, with Howe's men yet to get a win in the league this season, we have high hopes of giving Wolves the run-around. But, who will the manager entrust with a start "up top"?!
Newcastle United have appointed David Hopkinson as their new CEO to replace the outgoing Darren Eales. David arrives with a powerful reputation in business built in his hometown of Toronto as well as New York and Madrid. It's been a tumultuous year at executive level and we welcome David's leadership although time will be a finite resource as he gets up to speed. While the process has taken almost a year, we're hoping we've got the right man to work with Eddie Howe and other senior executives, including whoever comes in as Director of Football. The overwhelming emotion, and there have been many, is 'thank heavens that's all over with' but to suggest it's simple relief is to dramatically understate the complicated feelings we're left with. Whatever we think or feel, Alexander Isak is now a Liverpool player, Yoanne Wissa is our new number 9, and we can concentrate on the football with a stronger squad and an exciting Champions League campaign in store. Meanwhile, The Lasses have a new signing as they target a promotion spot in WSL 2, and we're expecting an announcement on our new CEO very soon (it is now, we think, ACTUALLY imminent).
