Dear Vets Unleashed: Ethical Quandaries

Dear Vets Unleashed: Ethical Quandaries

This week we're answering listener mail and providing moral guidance on what to do in some dicey situations.  What do you do when you see someone mistreating their animal? How do you handle difficult neighbors when a pet is involved?  What steps should you take in the work environment if you suspect someone is diverting medication?   If you need help:   Call or text 988 in the US,   or call The National Addiction Helpline (844) 289-0879   Not every situation has a clear answer, but years of experience has exposed the Vets to these issues on more than one occasion.  Luckily, we have some answers to help guide listeners through these ethical quandaries.   This Week's Drink:   The Moral Compass-   Grenadine Vodka Blue Curacao A splash of lime juice

Artificial Intelligence in Veterinary Medicine

Artificial Intelligence in Veterinary Medicine

Beep boop beep, veterinarians and bartenders beware, the robots are coming to take yer jobs!  While AI is an integral part of running our societies, it's been the center of sensationalism in the news.  So what's the reality of how it's being used, and where is it showing up in animal care practice?   The Vets courageously trust AI to help write out show talking points. Fearlessly employ it to concoct delicious cocktail recipes. And responsibly address the way that AI acts as a helpful tool in the clinic and the profession.  Whether it's providing better records, interpreting huge swaths of medical data, or assisting medical staff analyze samples and images to improve care, AI is becoming an integral part of treatment. Bow down before your Overlords, and be nice to your Alexa.   This week's drink from ChatGPT, the "Neural Nectar":   Ingredients: - 2 oz Botanical Infused Gin (representing the precision of AI) - 1 oz Blue Curacao (symbolizing the digital aspect of medicine) - 0.5 oz Elderflower Liqueur (for a touch of elegance) - 1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice (adding a zing of vitality)   Instructions: 1. In a shaker, combine the infused gin, Blue Curacao, Elderflower Liqueur, and fresh lemon juice with ice. 2. Shake vigorously to blend the flavors and chill the mixture. 3. Strain into a martini glass to capture the essence of innovation. 4. Garnish with a twist of lemon peel for a visually appealing touch. 5. Sip and savor the Neural Nectar, celebrating the harmonious blend of technology and healthcare in a single delightful concoction. Cheers to the future of AI in medicine!

Spectrum Of Care: Is Good Enough Good Enough?

Spectrum Of Care: Is Good Enough Good Enough?

Vets and pet parents come to the medical care experience with their own viewpoints and assumptions on what is necessary or practical when it concerns delivering care.  But what does it mean to give, or receive, the right treatment for our pets?   In this episode, we explore the spectrum of care, and how professionals balance what might be considered top-tier or "gold standard" treatment against what clients are reasonably able to afford. Diving into real life examples, Dr. Mike and Dr. Scott discuss how individual cases can be approached in a spectrum of care, so that every animal is able to leave the office with a plan to achieve the most healthful outcome, and best quality of life. This week's cocktail:   The Gold Standard-   Curacao Marshmallow Liqueur  Orange Juice   (who needs ratios, just eyeball it till the fumes make your eyes water)

Choosing Kindness

Choosing Kindness

Whether it's being cut off in traffic or dealing with an irate client, it's natural to react in anger. Is there anything we can do to change our nature and create a more positive response?  Today, Dr. Scott and Dr. Mike talk with writer, podcaster and dog life coach extraordinaire Katya Lidsky on the ways we can approach and assess frustrating situations, and to actively choose kindness as our first response.   As veterinarians, patience and love for animals is crucial to understanding and dealing with behaviors that are born of fear, pain, or lack of control.  Learning to extend that mentality towards the people in our lives can teach us to adjust our inner response, and approach difficulty with kindness.   https://www.katyalidsky.com/ Twitter @katyalidsky       The Old Cuban:   https://www.liquor.com/recipes/old-cuban/   6 whole mint leaves 1 ounce simple syrup 3/4 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed 1 1/2 ounces aged rum 2 dashes Angostura bitters 2 ounces Champagne, chilled Garnish: mint sprig Steps Muddle the mint leaves with the simple syrup and lime juice in a shaker. Ep 75: Eliminating Vet Care Deserts with Dr. Courtney Campbell

Ep 75: Eliminating Vet Care Deserts with Dr. Courtney Campbell

Hey gang! Welcome back to another episode of Vets Unleashed, the podcast that speaks with animal lovers and professionals about the comings and goings in the animal kingdom.  Whether you are a new owner or a veteran, finding quality pet care you can trust can be an ordeal. These issues are exacerbated even more in areas where pet care isn't readily accessible. These "Vet Deserts'' are defined as areas with less than one veterinarian for every 200 households. Such a dearth of pet care can cause a strain on your pet (and families) emotional well-being. Combined with other potential barriers, these vet deserts can make pet care an arduous ordeal. In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Cortney Campbell. Dr. Campbell has a wealth of experience as a podcaster, lecturer, veterinarian, and animal advocate. We discuss the need for diversity in the vet world, how vet deserts can affect the pet's emotional and physical well-being, overcoming barriers for care and what it is like to work in corporate vet care. This episode focuses and does a great job of highlighting the issues that come from vet deserts and how they affect healthcare. Thanks for joining us!

Ep 74: How to Set Up a Trust for Your Pet with Jeff Stromberg

In today's episode, the Vets are embarking on a topic they've never had before - estate planning for your pets. They're joined by Jeff Stromberg, an estate planning attorney, who offers insight into estate planning and setting up a fund for your pet should anything happen to you.   From how to get started to where the money actually goes, Jeff answers some important but not-so-commonly asked questions about making sure your pet is well cared for if anything unfortunate is to happen to you. Jeff shares who oversees the money you leave to your pets, how inflation affects the money placed into a trust, why you might want alternative trustees when it comes to your pet, and how to pick a reasonable amount of money to leave in your pet's trust.
