Tom Parry watches 'They Think It's All Rovers' (QK Reloaded)

In an effort to become podcasting's version of UK Gold, we're spinning it back and replaying the glory days of QK, every Tuesday and Thursday. This is: QK Reloaded. We'll be playing through our original episodes in release order. And this is... Legendary QK alumni Tom Parry. This episode was first broadcast on 30th APril 2018. --- Our guest this week is comedian, Wolves fan, and friend of the show, Tom Parry. For his second appearance on the show it’s a trademark ‘Quickly Kevin…’ watch along. This time round we dissect the unanimous winner of our listener chosen 90’s football documentary recommendation - 'They Think It's All Rover's'.   Be warned, this film, charting Doncaster Rover's abysmal 1997/98 season as they fight against relegation from the football league whilst under the control of nefarious owners, makes the Sunderland 'Premier Passions' documentary look like a feel-good romp.   We also have some ‘Frying with laughter’ updates about the big man himself, and we ponder, for far too long and too often, just exactly who, or WHAT, is spoon molester Uri Geller? And why did he make fleeting appearances at several lower league clubs during the 90's?   Turn on. Tune in. Wenger out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This episode was first broadcast on 23rd April 2023. --- Our guest this week is a Chelsea, Everton and Tranmere legend. A man as comfortable writing music reviews for the NME, or enjoying a bowl of goulash whilst reading Kafka as he was evading a crunching Stuart Pearce tackle. It’s Scottish winger, indie DJ, and all round renaissance man, Pat Nevin.   Plus we’ve got more ‘Frying with laughter’, a tall tale of Gazza hijacking a kids football match, and we explore the myth and merit of match day whip rounds. Can all that loose change really be used to buy a new striker? Probably not…   Twitter: @quicklykevin Facebook: quicklykevin Instagram: quicklykevin Email: hello@quicklykevin Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

LBHY: Big Ron Manager: Episode Two with Ivo Graham

We’re back for the second instalment of Big Ron Manager! Tensions continue to rise at Peterborough United as manager Steve Bleasdale attempts to keep the club’s promotion push on track.  Key defender Mark Arber has got the shits, striker James Quinn needs eye drops for conjunctivitis and owner Barry Fry keeps splashing cash on lavish buffets.  Can Bleao start making valid points and prevent himself from losing the dressing room? James shares stories from his early days - growing up with Glasgow’s most famous chippy as the family business and making his professional debut only after shovelling snow off the pitch. He recalls missing his flight home after his Scotland debut, and reflects on those unforgettable goals against the Netherlands and France. James also opens up about his time at Everton, including Pierluigi Collina’s memorable refereeing performance in the Champions League clash with Villarreal. In an effort to become podcasting's version of UK Gold, we're spinning it back and replaying the glory days of QK, every Tuesday and Thursday. This is: QK Reloaded. We'll be playing through our original episodes in release order. And this is... Part 2 of Ivo Graham tackling Sweeper. This episode was first broadcast 3rd April 2018. ------- Quickly Kevin: S03 EP03 - 'Sweeper!' by Steve Bruce with Ivo Graham (Part 2 of 2) THIS IS PART 2 of 2 - if you haven't already listened to part 1 please go back and do so now! In a special double episode, it's the much anticipated return of comedian Ivo Graham to discuss the second book in Steve Bruce's literary canon, 'Sweeper!'. If you haven't already listened to the first appearance in Series 1 of 'Quickly Kevin...' we recommend you do that now, and for those of you who have, rest assured as old favourites the Jaguar XJ8, a questionable attitude to gender equality, and the trademark leaden prose all return. Along with some fascinating new ruminations on tripe, attacking full backs, and the most sexually charged dialogue since Bogart and Bacall first shared the screen, as Bruce's alter ego, football manager turned reluctant detective Steve Barnes, crosses paths with a gun toting femme-fatal in a clumsily plotted sequel we'll generously describe as barely comprehensible. All this and the usual correspondence, brand new features (because that's exactly what the show needs) and the end of episode 90's Football based quiz. Enjoy! Lee Dixon (QK Reloaded)

Lee Dixon (QK Reloaded)

In an effort to become podcasting's version of UK Gold, we're spinning it back and replaying the glory days of QK, every Tuesday and Thursday. This is: QK Reloaded. We'll be playing through our original episodes in release order. And this is... Scorer of the greatest own goal of the 90s, Lee Dixon. The episode was first broadcast 26th March 2018. -- In terms of value for money, there can be few more astute signings than the £375,000 George Graham paid Stoke City for Lee Dixon in January 1988. 25% of arguably the greatest 90s defence, Lee finished his Arsenal career with four league titles, three FA Cup winners medals, a UEFA Cup Winner's Cup medal and infamously a runners-up medal in the latter competition too. But it was the first of his league championship medals that intrigued us most; the night of 26th May 1989, Liverpool v Arsenal - a championship play off in the last game of the season. For a whole host of reasons, from Fever Pitch to the ramifications of the Hillsborough disaster, the 1988/89 season marked the end of football as it had largely been for 100 years. And in it's culmination, Michael Thomas' last minute winner didn't just cement the league for Arsenal, it also cemented the idea of live football as a major box office draw, with the dawn of the Premier League coming soon after. We put all of this to Lee. Plus... we speculate as to whether Sean Dyche eats worms. LBHY: Back to the Floor: Into the Lions' Den - Millwall FC (2000) with Henry Paker

In this episode, we're joined by comedian Henry Paker - one third of the brilliant Three Bean Salad podcast - as we revisit Back to the Floor: Into the Lions' Den - Millwall FC (2000), where club owner Theo Paphitis tries to shake things up behind the scenes. Food takes centre stage in this documentary - can Theo survive dodgy pies, a toast-related standoff with the players, and a debate over whether staff should be allowed to take burgers home? And then there’s Putty, the unforgettable Millwall kitman… you’re welcome in advance for introducing him into your life. For this episode, we are joined by former England, Southampton and Everton striker James Beattie. He also chats about playing alongside Matt Le Tissier at Southampton, his theory for not being picked for Euro 2004 and tearing up Doug Ellis’ front garden. Discerning broadsheet reader and noted 'clever footballer', Graeme's career was a 90s rollercoaster ride through triumph, success and controversy. In an effort to become podcasting's version of UK Gold, we're spinning it back and replaying the glory days of QK, every Tuesday and Thursday. This is: QK Reloaded. We'll be playing through our original episodes in release order. And this is... The incredible Mark Lawrenson. This episode was first published 16th October 2017. ------ Our guest this week did it all as a player; five league titles, one European cup, one FA cup, and three league cups, as part of one of the greatest Liverpool teams ever assembled. But it was with the BBC in the 90s that Mark Lawrenson came into his own as one of the most recognisable pundits of the embryonic Premier League; all while juggling a marketing gig for Guinness and the surely nightmarish role of Keegan's defensive coach in Newcastle's most attacking period. Plus, we find out what Gavin Peacock's been up to since he quit his own punditry career to become a Christian minister in Canada (no, really). Learn more about your ad choices. This episode was first broadcast on 9th October 2017. ---- Our guest this week is one third of our favourite comedy sketch troupe ‘Pappys’; it’s upper-body nudity enthusiast and massive Wolves fan, Tom Parry. The 90s were a period of medium resurgence for Wolves after a desperate period in the late 80s which saw them drop into the fourth tier of English football for the only time in their history. Spearheading that charge for Wolves was Tom Parry’s hero; Mr Steve Bull. We find out about Steve’s remarkable inclusion in the England squad for the 1990 World Cup, his inexplicable local newspaper column, and which deep-fried foodstuff Steve was seen carrying in inordinate amounts.
