On Joy and Sorrow<br>by Kahill Gilbran<br>欢乐与忧伤---纪伯伦<br><br>Then a woman said, “Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow.”<br>And he answered: Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.<br>And the selfsame well from<br>Which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.<br><br>一位妇人说:请给我们谈谈欢乐和忧伤。<br>他回答:你们的欢乐是无法掩饰的忧伤。<br>你欢笑的泉眼常常也饱含着泪水。<br><br>And how else can it be?<br>The deeper that sorrow carves into your being.<br>The more joy you can contain.<br>Is not the cup that hold your wine the very cup<br>That was burned in the potter’s oven?<br>And is not the lute that soothes your spirit,<br>The very wood that was hollowed with knives?<br><br>除此之外,又当如何?<br>镌刻在你们身上的忧伤愈深,你们能盛装的欢乐愈多。<br>斟满了美酒的杯盏,难道不是曾在陶工炉火中锻造的杯盏吗?<br><br>When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and<br>You shall find it is only that which has given<br>You sorrow that is giving you joy.<br>When you are sorrowful look again in your heart,<br>And you shall see that in truth you are weeping for<br>That which has been your delight...
